Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer

Roadside vegetable stand - Milton, DE

Well folks, we're officially into the lazy, hazy days of summer.  I just got back from Panera Bread.  I figured it was safe to go out on Route 1 this time of evening.  The Saturday logjam of traffic was pretty well dissipated by this hour of the day.

Bill checking out our neighbors' garage sale items this morning

It was SO HOT today, that we just lazed and hazed our day around the house here today.  Some of our neighbors has a garage sale.  We are asked to participate but I just couldn't get up the enthusiasm for getting some of my junk collectibles together to put on display to possibly sell for 25 or 50 cents.  Not for me folks.

I'm trying to think of what I did today and my mind is drawing a blank.  How about this for a blog posting?  I'm coming up empty folks!

Francis Scott Key
Oh, how about this?  On Wednesday and Thursday at the hotel I checked in a couple of distinguished guests. On Wednesday it was Francis Scott Key.  You remember Francis don't you?  He wrote our national anthem, "The Stars Bungled Banner".  The one that is so hard to sing and remember the lyrics to.  The gentleman was quite a pleasure to meet.

Dolly Madison
Thursday Dolly Madison herself checked in the hotel.  I asked "Dolly" if I could take her picture.  She said "Well, I'm a bit dewey ( I think she meant she was sweaty) but alright." The heat and humidity of the past week left no one untouched folks, even the wife of the fourth president of these United States, Dolly Madison.  Seriously though folks, these fine individuals were actors in town for historical reenactments of the Lewes Historical Society.  The hotel where I work was generous enough to provide them with room and board.  That's just the kind of fine gentleman I work for.

At the top of this blog is a picture of the roadside fruit and veggie stand in Milton.  Summer doesn't officially begin for me until this stand opens.  It opened this week and I got my first ears of fresh corn.  Delicious!

I hope you're enjoying your summer as much as I am.

    1. Tai,

They were actors in town staying at our hotel for a historical reenactment. Always fun when actors show up at the hotel. They have such open personalities and very interesting to talk to.

  2. Nice! Our summer so far has been cold (by your standards) and wet. Yuck. But, the coming week is predicted to be more summer like. Wish us luck! Our garden needs it.

    1. Walt,

After living in the middle of the woods for 25 years, I wanted to live in the open. I have outlined the backyard with trees and shrubbery but kept the main part of the yard open except for the Purple Martin House. They're supposed to take care of my mosquitoes but I still have plenty of mosquitoes because of the heavy rainfalls and the hot and humid days. I feel like we're in Miami Florida. During your next visit you'll have to visit us. I'll take you to our local winery, the Nassau Winery.

    1. Anne Marie,

Take a break! You and your husband come on down to the hotel during the week. I can give you 10% off the regular room rate. We have openings during the week (Sunday through Thursday). Weekends we've been sold out. Lots of stuff going on in Lewes. You can visit your buds Joe and Mark while you're in town.

  4. Ron,

Yes, lot of work to put a yard sale together and often a lot of work to haul all that stuff back in with very little gain. Yard Sales have increased this year, which is a sign of the economy.

Oh, Dolly Madison? You know when we were talking yesterday, i thought you said Dolly Parton. That's why I didn't react much.

Maybe Dolly was telling you she was hot and could use some ice cream.

    1. Lar,

These were actors participating in something called "Chataugua Weekend", whatever that is. When I worked at the Hampton Inn in Lionville, Ben Franklin (your ancestor I believe) used to stop by once a year with his wife and put on a show. The actor who played Ben Franklin looked exactly like him too. You've probably seen him on local Phiadelphia TV

    3. Anne Marie,

Yes, it was Ralph Archibold! As soon as you mentioned his name it rung a bell. I have a picture of him that I took when he was at the Hampton Inn somewhere. Is he still around?

You're definitely right to wait until the after season to visit Lewes. Many nice days in the fall and if you visit during the week we can definitely give you a break on the room rates.

ralph is still around and he married "betsy ross" within the past 5 years. unfortunately, ralph had a stroke and is not doing the ben impersonations as he did previously. I am not sure whether another "ben franklin" has been making the rounds.

    5. Anne Marie,

The woman who portrayed Betsy Ross also portrayed Ben Franklin's wife. She was quite attractive. I'm sorry to hear that Ralph had a stroke. Too many people getting strokes lately. When my times comes I hope I go fast without the complications of a stroke.

  5. For a woman who makes all those nasty fast food style cakes, she looks healthy enough. I appreciate how she sponsored the Charlie Brown shows in my youth.

Maybe it was a regional thing. And I haven't actually seen the brand around here in years. But Charlie Brown Specials were always 'brought to you by Dolly Madison Cakes'. http://www.hostessbrands.com/Brands/DollyMadison.aspx

Hello! I don't know how long ago it was, but Ben and Betsy (Ralph Archbold, and Linda Archbold) stay in Hampton Inns all the time. We love the comfortable beds! Ralph has been back to "Being Ben" since 6 months after the stroke, but now we use a little padding for his belly, since the cardiologist doesn't want him over 200lbs. All of his life, he thought he had a murmur, when actually, part of his heart was not beating, which formed a clot, that led to the stroke. We try to stay away from all the little cakes, Dolly's, Hostess, or Tastykakes! This 4th, we were in the Philadelphia Parade, and opened the new Revel Casino in Atlantic City. Ben will help promote the Will Farrell film, "The Candidate" look for him on the news on July 31st. Hope to see you again in Delaware, Linda Archbold, (Betsy Ross)
