New Computer Setup

Well folks, I now a a new Apple computer.  No, this isn't it, I'm typing this blog post on my old iMac because I encountered a problem in setting up my new computer. Specifically, iPhoto which is the reason I got the new iMac.  My old computer was hanging up too much when I accessed my photos on iPhoto.

Actually, the setup of my new computer was going fine and I was almost finished until I went to access my videos in iPhoto.  I couldn't access them.  They're blank and I get a message "OSSTATUS ERROR 54".

I was very impressed when I removed my 27 inch iMac from the box.  Only one cord, the power cord.  No tower and a jumble of wires.

I simply removed my old iMac and put the new one in it's place on my desktop and plugged in the speaker wires and ethernet cable and I turned on the power.  The new computer was programmed to walk me through the final steps of the setup, the first one being transferring all my data from my old computer (Time Capsule) to my new computer. That took about 13 hours (overnight).  Most of the data transferred of course was my iPhotos, videos and iMovies.  Again, the main reason I got the new computer.

UPDATE!  I just got a call back from "Richard", my Apple help guy.  My videos are now appearing after a couple of thumbnail updates.  Don't ask me how that works, all I know is that my precious videos are now on my new computer and I'm a happy Delawarean.

Now, to make a call to get my new Airport Time Capsule set up.  Wish me luck!

  1. Ron,

I was wondering if the data had finally transferred over.

    1. Lar,
Everything is just about done. I was on the phone for HOURS with Apply support setting up a new network and each computer with its own Time Capsule backup. My head hurts because the person I was on the phone with had an Indian accent. But we got the job done and I'm happy, but my head hurts. I need time to recover.

  2. Well, I'm glad that your videos are finally appearing (I heard your big sigh of relief).
Modern technology is too complex for my delicate constitution. I maneuver my computer with virginal innocence.

If I had a "help" guy like Richard, I'd use him mercilessly.......

    1. Jon,
I was transferred to a specialist in the Time Capsule department. She was Indian (with the accent). We were on the phone for about two hours setting up a new network, each with its own Time Capsule backup. We hit a few snags and her accent didn't help, because a third of what she was saying I couldn't understand but we got the job done. I'm backing up the whole hard drive now as I type this. Soon I will be sailing again.

    1. NB,
Apple support is a big help. We had to setup a new network so I could have each computer with its own Time Capsule backup. The two plus hours I spent on the phone with "Juliette" was stressful but, in the end, successful. She was hard to understand because of her Indian accent but she knew what she was doing and was patient with me so that's all I can ask. We got the job done and now I'm ready to coast on out for another five years, blogging and what not.

    1. So far, so good! I'm loving this new computer. I'm not feeling as bad about all the $$$$$$ I spent for this space shuttle.

  7. Hi Ron, Long time no chat, again I haven't been on the blogosphere that much. Back in January spent most of the month feeling bleagh. Now working lots more over-time. So maybe I'll be able to get another computer as well. I did get a refurbished unit after Bloggerpalozza last March. I'm so glad you like your new one that much. But you really don't want me to get an iMac. If I had any questions I'm afraid you would be my go to guy for Apple advice. But still I'm having good luck with my Windows 7 machine and my Android tablet. Now all I need is time to blog. Take care my friend. Randy in NEB.

    1. Hi Randy,
So good to hear from you again. When these long spells go by, I often wonder "What's happened to Randy? What's Randy doing?" I should have known you're still working hard.
I'm loving my new iMac computer. By the way, one of the big advantages of having an Apple product, is that their support service is superb. I have a three year agreement with this computer. They answer the phone, they're willing to help you and they know what they're talking about unlike Microsoft support (is there Microsoft support? I wouldn't know, never had it) or any of the other computer companies like Dell or Acer. Bill has a HP lap top with Windows 8.1. He curses it every day. If it was me I would throw the damn thing out in the trash. It's just not worth all the aggravation of all the incessant upgrades, glitches, and the latest, that non-user friendly "the tiles" that he has to navigate around to just on his computer. I'm ranting now, which I often do when speaking of Microsoft and any Windows based computer.
It's cold here this morning Randy (5 degrees) and even colder in Pat's Toronto (minus 15). Spring is on the way!

  8. Oh, happy you, Ron! I want, when my turn comes to ditch this old fossil, to have a similar, relatively smooth experience.
Hope your installation completes in like successful fashion. I'm watching you - and have also now caught up on your blogs which had been hindered by an excessive speight of cinema-going. As that is now out of the way and I don't expect to be seeing any more films for possibly an entire week (thank God!), hope I can now ride alongside you again.

    1. Ray,
Always good to see "Raybeard" leaving a comment. Again, I urge you when you get your new computer (and you will) get an iMac or Macbook Pro. You will never regret it. Sure, they cost a bit more but the cost is worth it. You won't be plagued with all the endless upgrades and virus protections soft wear expense and general non0user friendly structure of Windows based computers. Using an Apple based product is fun. Not for nothing is Apple the most profitable company in the history of the world (see last quarter's profits). I'm on my new computer now and loving it. Life is too short for frustrations, minimize those frustrations wherever you can.
As for the movies, I'm looking for some good movies now that I've run through my "The Wire" series binge watching. I'm going to check your older blog postings for reviews of movies that you liked. I had five DVD's over the weekend, the first two I couldn't watch, they were that terrible. I have to seriously redo my queue in Netflix, with help from your blog reviews of movies you've seen.
      Have a great day Ray!

    2. Thanks, Ron. And thanks for your advice re acquiring new computer which I know makes sense. It's the taking the plunge that needs some guts. If I had someone here as knowledgeable support (in addition to the computer firm themselves) I'd feel a lot more confident about going for it.

Btw: I noticed in one of your L.A. video clips you two were standing near a cinema which was showing two worthwhile films which I've recently reviewed - 'Into the Woods' and 'Selma'. It's rather telling (or is it?) that Pat wanted to see 'Taken 3' rather than these two 'quality' films. But what do I know? I haven't seen his film - and I know he's a sucker for 'cheap thrills' - and there's nothing wrong with that.
Btw2: You've GOT to see 'Love is Strange'!
