Big Day Today!

Bill and me last week in the North Carolina mountains

Today the Delaware State Senate votes on HB 75, the Marriage Equality bill.  If this bill passes, I will marry the man in the photo at the beginning of this posting.

His name is Bill Kelly.  We met July 3rd, 1964.  This July we will celebrate our 49th anniversary of being together.

Even though we haven't been officially married  there is one thing I know for sure, Bill and I have been married in our hearts for almost 49 years.
Despite threats, discrimination, harassment and ostracization, we have tried to live out those words that we hope to someday say under law: "Until death do us part."

  1. Won't that be a great thing!

I am now singing that old Fifth Dimension song, 'Wedding Bell Blues' with the line 'Won't you marry me Bill, I love you so and always will!'

  2. I bet you're pinching yourself that it could actually be happening, Ron. If it goes through nothing's going to top it in your lifetime. But you already know that. I'll be awaiting the marvellous news with keen anticipation. Wonderful!

    1. Ray,

Yes, I am pinching myself that that marriage equality could actually happen in my lifetime. I feel very privileged that I was asked to participate in helping to make marriage equality a reality in Delaware. Sometimes history is thrust upon us. I gladly accept!

  4. Great post, as always. Hey - when you and Bill are finally able to get married, you can send a wedding invitation to your homophobic relative. That should be enough to kill him!

    1. Jon,

Hey, I actually thought of doing just that! There they are, ensconced in their protective bubble up there in those beautiful mountains. What he doesn't realize is that soon his whole world is going to change when everybody who is gay comes out. The avalanche has already started.

  5. As you say in your hearts you are already married. Will be nice to make it official. Love the then and now photos. You and Bill are extremely lucky to have been together for 49 years. I was married for 22 long years and hopefully now am with the person who I will see out the rest of my term. Lea is 36 and I'm 54! She says I need to live to 117! All the best for the upcoming vote!

    1. Paul,

I just hope we can last that long! The vote is next week. If it goes though I don't think it is effective until July of next year. By then we will have been together 50 years. In the meantime I have surgery tomorrow for my prostate cancer, which I'm not looking forward to. What I am looking forward to is getting back to my normal, dull routine. Then get married.

    1. Dr. Spo,

I just have too much going on in my life these days. Whatever happened to my "retirement?"
