Veterans' Day 2017

Today is Veterans' Day. This is the day in which we honor all those men and women who have given everything to maintain the freedom we have today in the free world.

Me, 1958 DHS Marching Band - Sousaphone player
Me, Army Recruit 1960

This is a day that is not only celebrated here in the United States but other free world countries like Canada, where this day is called Remembrance Day.  Just a few minutes ago I called Pat and he was at a Remembrance Day ceremony.
And just where do you think I got my inspiration for a beard? John Phillip Sousa of course!

I am not at a formal ceremony today but I did want to take this time to expressed my gratitude to all those men and women who have sacrificed so much so we can live as free people as we do today.

As a former marching band member, I always choked up when I marched and played John Phillip Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever."

One of my very favorite movies from the Fifties was the movie "Stars and Stripes Forever" which was a biography of John Phillip Sousa, played by Clifton Webb.

  1. I'm going to be totally shallow here. I watched that movie for Robert Wagner, nothing else. My husband played the sousaphone in high school. He went into professorial mode when I called it a tuba. I married the geek anyway. By the way, you got better looking as you aged. You kind of look like a serial killer in your uniform :) .

I come from a semi-long line of navy veterans, and postal workers. I was born in San Diego at the navy hospital. Growing up, my father used to make us watch all of the military movies that came on t.v. at least once. Midway was his favorite. I remember him every time one comes on television. Okay, Saturday morning ramble is over. Have a good weekend, Ron.

    1. Deedles,
How cool is that? Your husband also played the Sousaphone. I don't remember Robert Wagner in the film, only Clifton Webb. I always liked Clifton. It wasn't until much later I found out he was gay. He's my type. Robert Wagner is good-looking but I am more attracted to the Clifton Webb type of man. Watching him conducting the band in the movie, his posture is exactly the same as Pat's. Same height and weight too.
      Have a great weekend Deedles!
