I Believe

Me, 1952 at ten years old - 3rd grade class picture

When I was 10 years old (74 years ago), I was taught in school the system of checks and balances in the American democracy that would prevent a tyrant taking over. I believed that I, as an American, I was safe from tyrants that often took over other countries. With the ascension of Trump and the total capitulation of the other Republican dominated two branches of government, a tyrant now rules America. However, I believe that the majority of American people will ultimately reject this tyrant

Thanks Jon! I didn't know it at the time. Had one of "those" fathers who constantly belittled me. Looking back now I guess I was a cute kid. Just like you Jon!

Ah, when you were young and innocent! Well, we know the first of these is long gone, but the second? Only YOU know, right? :-)

The day when 47 is no more - whether gone up in smoke or 6 foot under OR taken away and put in a lunatic asylum - is going to be just about the sweetest day in American history - as well as the world's. The jubilation will be like nothing we've seen yet! Let's have a worlwide holiday - for an entire week!

What a handsome lad.

I would be born five years later.

I was taught the same thing as many of us were — and it still holds true.

My anger, frustration, and disbelief over the last several months have expanded beyond Mussolini Don to the enablers. Diaper Don is going to do what Diaper Don does. It’s the enablers — those inside and outside the current administration, our U.S. Supreme Court, our judicial branch, and our legislative branch.

The U.S. Constitution was built on a foundation of good faith and civic decency. Our Founding Fathers could never have imagined that America would find itself here. But this is what the people voted for. Now that the chickens have come home to roost, many are running around like Chicken Little — and the sky is indeed falling.

We must find a way to pull ourselves back. I could go down many avenues of discourse, but I believe the American people will eventually wake up and put an end to this debauchery. It’s going to be painful, and it will take time to right the ship and return to course.

When this is all over, I wish for everyone — from top to bottom, inside and outside of government — who had a hand in creating this state of affairs to never again hold public office or profit from it. We must reinforce our democratic norms with real consequences. Let the accountability begin.

We failed to do it after the Civil War, and we’ve been paying for it ever since.
