| Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Academy Awards |
Were you watching the Oscar telecast last night?
Did you see Will Smith slap the shit out of Chris Rock because Rock made a joke about Smith's wife's lack of hair?
For God's sake! What have we come too?
For me Will Smith has always been overrated.
Will Smith is no Sidney Poitier.
Later, when Smith received the Best Actor Oscar he offered somewhat of a strained "apology" to the Academy but none to the man he assaulted on stage.
Again, are there no consequences for violence committed so openly by a famous person?
The past month I've been sick to my stomach watching the destruction and killing of a peaceful people, the Ukrainians by the sub-human soulless Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
I usually watch the news, mostly as background to me doing something else like cooking or on my computer. Now I mostly turn off the TV when pictures of the destruction and killing of innocent Ukrainians appear on TV.
The Ukrainian leader Zelensky begs for help from the allied NATA countries but receives little but lots of platitudes.
Biden stumbles his way through another read speech yet doesn't directly help Zelensky and his country stop the incessant bombing that is destroying his country.
I realize I am very fortunate to live in a country that is surrounded by two large oceans that protect us from sub-human butchers like Putin but still, it makes me sick to my stomach to see the monster Putin get away with his aggression on his peaceful neighbor. Why? Just so he can add Ukraine to his portfolio of countries that he controls?
I was born in 1941, a month before our country was attacked by Japan at Pearl Harbor. All my life I've lived under the threat of war as have all of us.
In grade school we were told to get under our desks if atom bombs were dropped by Russia on the United States. Even then I knew getting under my desk wasn't going to save me from that hot skin peeling atom bomb blast.
During my adult years I just missed Viet Nam. Pure luck. Lot of guys and gals my age weren't so lucky.
Then there was Afghanistan and Iraq. Again, many of our fellow young Americans died and injured.
So Will Smith walking on the stage at the Academy Awards and slapping Chris Rock for a joke? Not a good move Will Smith.
Apologize to Chris Rock and the public for your tasteless display of violence Will Smith. You're not cool.

I do not and did not watch the Oscars (or any other award show displaying even more self aggrandizing by the rich and famous) but the slap has been plastered all of the news and social media because...America. Regardless of how people feel about either man, the slap was inappropriate, unprofessional, and was a physical assault and should be dealt with swiftly and definitively. But Smith will get a pass because he's rich and famous and spiked ratings and popularity for the even, and that's all that matters.

Sean,
I normally don't watch the Oscars or any other awards shows because of the very reasons you state. However, I did watch the Oscars, while multi-tasking with other activities, because Pat was watching it and he likes to share his observations as the show goes on. I did see The Slap. There is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR VIOLENCE like this. Will Smith, like so many rich and famous, think they are above the law and many times they are (look at Trump, a lifetime of crime and he continues to get away with his crimes). What gets me is that thirty minutes later all those Hollywood types give Will Smith a standing ovation for receiving his Best Actor Oscar. Just this morning Will Smith came out with an "apology", one that you can be sure was well worked over and worded by a high priced public relations agency. Won't work. Will Smith is finished because he's been exposed as a thug like O. J. Simpson. WHO IN THE HELL DOES HE THINK HE IS? I'm so disappoint ed in Denzel Washington, Tyler Perry and Bradley Cooper for rushing to console Smith after his outburst of violence. You know what Will Smith was crying about don't you? He just saw his multi-million career go up in smoke. He couldn't' care less about his thuggery because that is who he is.

Sorry to disagree but Chris Rock is a bully, and he was a bully to Jada in front of millions of people. Words hurt. Jada has a condition that caused her to shave her head. It’s not funny band Chris knew that.
I wish Will Smith hit Chris hard enough to knock him out.
Chris won’t do that again, I think.
Karen,
I agree with you that Chris Rock made a bad joke at Jada's expense but violence isn't the answer. Will Smith should have called him out verbally. Violence is NEVER the answer.
Ron
I did not watch but already I am tired of hearing about it
On the other hand I think everybody 'won': the slapper, the slappee and The Oscars
Ur-spo,
EGADS! You didn't swatch?! Seriously though, I usually don't watch but I did watch this Oscar telecast. The slap was inappropriate but did raise the Oscar ratings and put Will Smith and Chris Rock's name in the forefront again. You're right, everyone "Won."
