I Hate To Paint

There are many mundane activities that I like.

I like to iron shirts.

I like to pull weeds.

I like to rake leaves and cut grass.

I like to cook.

But I hate to paint. Walls that is.  I can't quite pin the reason down why I hate to paint other than it just annoys me.  I can never seem to get it right.  Always seems to be a spot that I missed.

This morning I painted our media room a lovely light blue.  I think this is the first time in my life that I painted a whole room.  While I still don't like painting, I didn't hate it quite as much as I thought I would.  Perhaps because all the furniture was out of the room.  Remember, we had a water leak which ruined the wall to wall carpeting so we had to remove the carpet (Berber, very expensive) and paint the floor. Next Tuesday we're getting the leak fixed which is on the other side of the back wall.

The reason I painted the room was to help Bill. Bill has always done all our painting before including hanging wallpaper which we don't do anymore. Since we've moved to Casa Tipton-Kelly in 2006, we haven't painted any of our rooms.  Yes, all the rooms are the original builder grade boring (Oyster Shell) paint, much to the consternation of our interior decorator inclined neighbor Barbara.

Bill likes to paint but I could tell this job was too much for him.  He would never admit it, bless his heart, but he was making a good effort.  He didn't protest when I took the roller brush from him.  I told him I was just going to do a few "brushes".  Then I did a few more brushes, and more.  About an hour and a half later I finished the whole room. Bill said he enjoyed watching me paint the walls.

Bill is ninety years old. Jobs that he used to take in stride no longer come easy.  I do all the driving now. I never had to have a confrontation with taking the keys from him. It just came about gradually.  Same with this job, painting walls.

Now other jobs around the house I can't or won't do.  My bathroom toilet is leaking again.  Bill tried to fix it but it still leaks.  We have four toilets at Casa Tipton-Kelly. They all need to be looked at.  Two are never used except for the one visit Pat makes every year.  I told Bill I called Service Today to come in for maintenance for our toilets.

I may not like painting but I can paint. Other handyman jobs?  I'm not doing it folks.  I know my limitation.  Including shoveling the snow from our driveway which Bill always does.  We're going to get a snow blower.  I don't like to shovel snow either.

Bill is 90? wow. I knew that, but wow! Anyhow, it looks like you did a good job! I acquired a new handyman when I had my kitchen remodeled this past quarter. his name is Jeff Slivka. 302 296 6958. He is reasonable and versatile. I'm looking forward to seeing the newly completed room....

Ron,

I am glad you painted the room since it was a struggle for Bill. God Bless him for still shoveling snow at ninety!

I think it is a good idea to get a snow blower. I really enjoy your blog/vlogs.

Linda,
Thank you so much for your comment. We're going to get a snow blower. No more shoveling snow for Bill. And I'm not about to shovel snow, my heart won't take it.
