"I did not feel comfortable taking a risk. It was about the president and the inauguration and I wanted to make him and our country proud so I decided to sing along with my prerecorded track. I'm very proud of my performance."
Beyonce held a "press conference" yesterday to answer allegations that she lip synced the national anthem at President Obama's inauguration. Her "press conference" took no questions. She came out and with a digital image of the American flag waving behind her, she sang a her pitchy version of the American national anthem, the "Stars Bangled Banner." Then she made the above statement.
Sorry Beyonce, it's not "Okay." So what you're a perfectionist. On Inauguration day you were a phony. If you were going to lip synch the national anthem, then that should have been known ahead of time. You should have had the respect for your audience not to fool them into thinking you were singing live, even to the extent you pulled a fake microphone out of your ear.
I don't think anyone would have minded if Beyonce had made a mistake singing live. Audiences appear to see and hear singers singing live, not to a prerecorded track. Oh sure, Beyonce said that "this is a commonly accepted practice." It may be but it is still phony and you're lying to your audience.
Beyonce, how could you? We all know that Diana Ross is a diva and a massive phony. Especially that time she rented a house and furniture for her "at home" interview with Barbara Walters. We all know that Mariah Carey and Jennifer "Jo Lo" Lopez compete for the Complete Diva (Fat) Ass crown. But Beyonce? Somehow I thought you were beyond that.

I agree. I wish some of these musicians would just be honest. It wouldn't wreck their careers.
I've always felt that the measure of a musician is how well he or she can pull it off live. No mortal can realistically be expected to pull off live, the sound they get in a studio. Those that can come close are the real deal in my opinion. They're rare.
These days, studio tracks are mic-ed, auto-tuned, and mixed into oblivion. (They can do it with instruments too. It's called overdubbing.) Then there's the mastering process, which is a whole other set of magic that happens. (Good mastering engineers are a rare breed.) I'm not sure if a lot of people get that.
I think this might be why my musical taste veers away from the mainstream. A lot of it is fake.

I will agree with you about Beyonce, but I take umbrage with the Diana Ross statement.
I have actually met Diana Ross--and danced with her--and she was lovely and gracious and real to me and my friends.
As for the story of the rented house and furniture, well, the house was actually hers and, while she did re-furnish the home right before the taping of the interview, she only did that because she liked the new furniture better. She says the modern furniture suited the modern house better.

Yes, when I'm lied too. Maybe Beyonce should try telling the truth the next time. Who knew she was a fake. Even her "press conference" live singing was pitchy. You lost creditability Beyonce.

I like Beyonce and will continue to like her but I am disappointed that she choose to be dishonest and her "explanation" yesterday was just lame. She wanted to be "perfect" because os the respect she had for President Obama's inauguration? No, she wanted to be perfect for herself. What she should have done was apologized but when stars get as big as Beyonce, it is impossible for them to admit any mistakes. She made a mistake and she should just admit it and move on.

I agree. What you're hearing is what an army of lackeys and publicists are telling her to day. She's got enough clout (and talent) that she could at any time tell all of them, "We're doing this my way. Here's how it's gonna be!"
You're absolutely right Sean. Beyonce didn't have to lip synch. Even if her singing wasn't perfect, people wouldn't hold that against her because so many people love her including me. I am very disappointed in the lying. That always causes me to lose respect for someone, when they lie.

I guess that wasn't an apology for trying to fool everyone. She said she was doing it for the President, but all that she kept saying in her statement was "I, I, I." What she should have said was, "I'm sorry. I was wrong in not singing live. It won't happen again." But no, instead we get, "I was proud of my [non-]performance." But we really do have bigger problems to deal with than a pipsqueak pop singer.

You are EXACTLY right. She should have just apologized and worded it just like you said. And you're right, we do have bigger problems than her but I do think Beyonce symbolizes an important problem we have in this country, the bigger you are the more you think the same rules don't apply to you and you can lie and get away with it. As I said before, I'm not real upset about the lip synching (but I do think they should sing live), what angers me is the lying and assuming I would believe her lie. Then she does this lame "press conference". I didn't realize how arrogant she apparently is. I have lost respect for her.

Many, many performances at the Inauguration are lip-synced. YoYo Ma's piece last inauguration was taped. It has to do with the unpredictable weather, and the usual very cold temps that affect both voices and instruments. She sang the National Anthem, she just sang it in a nice warm studio and then played that later. Don't now that this excuses it, but I'd rather hear it sung properly and than poorly due to weather, etc.

I disagree with you my friend on this one. Singing live and playing a musical instrument in the cold air are quite different things. Kelly Clarkson didn' t lip-synch nor did James Taylor. So what if Beyonce's performance wasn't perfect, people have a right to expect live singing. If she wasn't going to sing live then state that before the performance, don't misrepresent yourself then come on later at a "press conference" that didn't take questions nor give answers and sing a (pitchy at it turned out) version of the national anthem and then arrogantly say "Okay?"' She could have sung it "properly" given the weather that day. There was no blizzard.
