Just a short message wishing everyone a very Happy New year!
I work tonight at the hotel. Tomorrow I have off which I will do some major vegging out. I need to do some serious relaxing.
This morning I spent about three hours on the phone with Apple Support trying to correct my Time Machine Error Code 92 problem. Sometimes folks, I am tempted to just toss all my digital age stuff out the window and retreat to my bed and read a book. Much less complicated and frustrating. However, I am hooked on all the convenience of the Digital Age so I will plow through.
Last night at the hotel I checked in a guy who had spent the last nine months walking across the country. His starting point was his home in Irvine California. This is his website.Nice guy. Very relaxed. Looked like a guy who had just walked across the country. He was amazing, he had less "luggage" (back pack) for a nine month trip than I take for a week's stay in Philadelphia. And yes, I did wash his clothes after he stripped down to his walking shorts. I asked him "why?" he walked across the country. Usually people who bike or ride across the country are raising funds of awareness of an issue. His answer was "I believe it is the end of times and I wanted to see the country before that happened." Oh, okay. Nice guy though. No proselytizing or any of that boring nonsense some self righteous Christians lay on you. He said he knew that others have claimed end of times but "this is different." We'll see. He said he started his trip with a meal at an Italian restaurant and wanted to end his trek with a meal at an Italian restaurant. I told him we had an excellent Italian restaurant in Lewes, Touch of Italy. He went there and had a huge chicken parmesan dinner. He said he's going to visit a friend in Virginia and then take a train back to his home in California. See the interesting people I meet at the hotel? Memorable. And we'll see about that "end of times" thing.
I'm working again at the hotel tonight. Almost a full house. Dropping the anchor in Lewes at the Overfalls Ship, fun times.

Ron how exciting with the hiker...I would have asked 20 questions...I love meeting people...One of the highlights of my medical career is being a medic in the Air Force...My first assignment was in Germany...There in Wiesbaden, we took care of all branches of the military and VIPs...The way things worked is that many had to be well enough to go from their bed to work...So, working on the surgery floor, many of my patients were there well past their surgery date convalescing...I loved getting to know them...They shared their personal lives as well as what they did in the military...I was known as the person that could talk to any patient and get the bottom line on the real issues affecting them...Yes, there were many gay patients...And yes we could sniff each other out...In the military, we never asked if someone is gay...We knew that they may be asked: "Did Victor tell you he was gay?" We just beat around the bush and things became clearer....Believe it or not one of my patients was a JAG officer on a Navy ship and part of his job was to kick out folks who were gay...And yes, he was gay...We were pen pals for a long time...Back to the hiker...I would have dug deeper into why he wanted to do the hike...He has a home in CA...How does that work...How is he supporting his journey and taking care of the homefront...What does/did he do for a living...Is he a trust fund baby...Does he have family...What has his experience been from the West Coast to the East...Tell me more about the people he met along the way...We live in a diverse world and I know it would be exciting meeting folks along the way...Oh, any dangers, idiots along the way...I may have paid an extra night or two just to get to know him...

PS-I love modern technology as well. I am not knee-deep in it as you but I love modern advances. Yes, you and I remember when computers, the internet was a glint in someone's eye. I follow Joe My God and sometimes those folks go back and forth about micro computer stuff that I think I am at MIT.
I couldn't comprehend walking across country. That's an incredible accomplishment.
I have enough trouble walking from my bedroom to the kitchen (*sigh*).
I hope you have an enjoyable New Year's Eve, Ron, and a fantastic 2020 filled with great adventures and all good things. My best wishes are with you always.

I was thinking of you when this guy told me he walked across the country. Actually he started in March. I'm having trouble walking up stairs now. And I'm so spoiled, I couldn't take any discomfort from walking in the cold, rain, heat or other elements. Can you imagine?

My best to you also Jon and your two feline friends. I hope Mr. Wonderful comes knocking on your door out there in your wooded mountain paradise. You never know! Stranger things have happened.

That's one of the main things I love about my job. I get to meet these interesting people. I wish I had more time to talk to "Michael". He told me he was adopted. Didn't find out who his birth mother was until she had died twelve years previously to him finding out.
He has a website which I haven't looked at yet. I think I'll take a look and if it is interesting I'll post a link to it in a future blog. I'll ask his permission. When I was in the Army, we didn't announce to each other we were gay either because of the same reason you stated. We could lose our clearance if we were just accused of being gay. It was ironic that I met so many gay people when I was at NSA, where they had regular purges of gays because they were considered a security risk. Even though there was never one case of a gay soldier being blackmailed to give up state secrets. We have a lot in common, I am very interested in other people's life stories. I guess that why I like to read biographies so much. We all have a story, usually ore interested than anything that is in the movies.Have a happy new year!
