nothing wrong with old school jazz; I have it on NPR right now. rap sux.
I love Swing and so does my son. When we lived in Miami, I took him to a Count Basie concert, which turned out to be Basie's last before his death. I actually do not remember ever hearing this Ellington piece, but like you said, it is marvelous! Marvelous, darling!

I am a *huge* fan of old-school jazz, having acquired the love from my singer/pianist mother. I used to be a half-way decent jazz clarinet player in my 20s, but I dropped the horn many years ago. Now, I'm just a half-assed guitar/piano player.
I have seen many stellar jazz musicians, Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie, when I was just 16...I even got to meet the Count!
Believe me, I most certainly "get this." Sir Duke was most awesome indeed!
I hope jazz becomes a new obsession for you!

This is the kind of jazz I've always liked. I never heard this before. I'm not a fan of that way out esoteric jazz though.

Oh man! I love that horn section, and only in my dreams can I play piano that well. My whole family, including kids, loves jazz like this.

I think you would like Erroll Garner's "Concert By The Sea" album. It can be found on YouTube.
I've never heard this one before but it's fantastic. Duke Ellington was truly unsurpassed. My parents met him once in Atlantic City, but that was way before I was born (I can play blues & ragtime on piano, but I've never played jazz).

I was surprised that I had never heard this before either. It's probably the best jazz riff I've ever heard. My previous one was Ahmed Jamal's "Poinciana." I love ragtime.
