The Conservative Republicans' Delusion

During the Clinton years I had to endure a constant harangue from my conservative Republican friends and family about "The Rapist" (i.e. Bill Clinton) and "The Bitch" (Hilary Clinton).  It got so bad that I hated to visit my Mother and my brother who lived with her because they would work themselves up into quite a lather after listening to Rush Limbaugh.  Hey, I wasn't too thrilled with Clinton either after he double-crossed the GLBT community by signing into the stupid "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law and Defense of Marriage Act.  But that didn't make a difference to them, they felt they had to hold me personally responsible that "The Rapist" was president.  Never mind that the Clinton Years were some of the best for the economy of this country in a generation.  No, the GOP Hate Machine was in full force to delegitimize Clinton by impeaching him.  Of course Clinton was reelected for another four year term thus throwing the Republican Haters into a frenzy of self-delusion.

After the Clinton eight years we got Bush. Need I say more?  I'm not even going there where that the Republicans probably stole both elections.  Look at the mess Bush Junior left us in,  but not to my conservative Republican friends and family. Soaked in their Fox News paranoia they think all the problem is the Democrats blaming Bush for everything that ever went wrong with this country.  Delusion.

So now we have Barack Obama reelected as president for a second term.  This after four years of the conservative Republicans trying to delegitimize President Obama as a Kenyan, Muslim, Socialist, Hitler, and homosexual.  Delusion.

Barack Obama, only the third president to be reelected with a 50% majority since Ronald Reagan,  the other presidents being Roosevelt and Eisenhower.

So now I am being bombarded again by some of my conservative Republican friends with their paranoid conspiracy theories that President Obama is a Socialist Muslim Terrorist who stole the election and is hell bent to destroy this country.  The Mau Mau are coming!

Friends, I have to be blunt here.  I'm 71 years old and frankly, I am tired of fighting these delusional people.  Friends, relatives notwithstanding, I am tired.  I can't imagine responding to their fantastical delusional conspiracy theories for the next four years.  I just can't.

I've tried to figure out what makes these people tick.  Is it racism?  Maybe that's part of it.  I really don't know.  This is what I do know.  I heard a quote today form a columnist that I never heard of before that sums up my feelings best.  This is the quote:

The GOP’s Shrinking Tent

“If you believe in climate change, finding a path to citizenship for millions of hard-working and the right to marry the person you love, there is no place in the Republican Party for you.”

Timothy Egan – New York Times 11/30/2012

So friends and relatives, do not send me any more of your hateful e-mails, snide comments, and put-downs because I voted for Barack Obama.  I have better things to do with my time than respond to you and try to explain reality to you.  My suggestion for you is to arrange an appointment with your therapist to get to the root of your hate filled delusion.

I'm running out of time folks and I am tired.  Take all that energy you're putting into hate and try to do something positive for this country that ALL OF US LIVE IN.

Take a deep breath and connect with reality.

And please folks, stop telling me what I can or cannot post on my Facebook page and blog.  As I have said many times before, if you don't like what I post on Facebook, unfriend me.  If you don't like what I post on my blog, then don't read it.  Last I heard this was a free country.  Check the U.S. Constitution that you're so fond of quoting to justify owning your automatic rifles, somewhere in that document is a mention of free speech.  It's called "The Bill of Rights".  Applies to gay men and women, black men and women, Hispanics, Asians, young people, women and yes, even white men.

  2. Very well said, Ron! Just remember that their attitudes are NOT your problem. It is their problem. They lost the election, so they just have to deal with it. They are now in the minority, so tell them to SHUT THE HELL UP!

As to Facebook, I would unfriend them.

    1. They can't deal with it David. They're like Romney, shellshocked. I guess that's what happens when those in power for so long feel that power slipping away. I'm tired of them bombarding me though. Sometimes I think I'm just too nice. Everyday I have to plow through their brainwashed, Fox approved crap. Tired of it, so tired of it. I just delete it now without even opening them. I'll probably lose some friends. So what?

  3. I am not sure some of those people were your friends anyway! Don't feel guilty about not reading their propaganda.

    1. Nadege,

I really don't understand them. I don't bombard them with my political views. They know I am a liberal. They know I am gay. However, they feel compelled to constantly send me e-mails and FB comments trying to convince me to see their way. I've told them I don't want to discuss it, because there really is no point. They will never admit or recognize how wrong they are. I think after awhile their beliefs become part of their identity and they are scared to death to face the truth. I find it very interesting that I don't proselytize them but they have no qualms about proselytize me with their whacked out conspiracy theories and how Obama is going to "destroy" the country. If anyone almost destroyed the country it was their hero, George W. Bush and that gang. Other than their political beliefs and we get along find. I just wish they would respect my political belief the same way I respect theirs. But I think that is part of the modern day Republican mindset, just lie and bully their way through the china shop.

  4. Luckily we have no equivalent to 'your' (sorry!) Rush Limbaugh here, nor to 'Fox News', though we do make up for it in our press. It must be galling to have people so close to you who can take in all that crap and not only actually BELIEVE it, but to live it out by aiming their fire on you and the likes of you!
If I see someone on the train reading our 'Daily Mail' I feel I know immediately what sort of person they are - and my blood pressure starts rising just by seeing them reading such twaddle - without even laughing!
What do people gain by e-mailing you and spouting out their punch-drunk hatred? It's okay, I know. It helps to give them the 'safety net' of an identification. Boy, they really must feel hopelessly insecure!

    1. Ray,

I think they're trying to convince me. They are so brainwashed but you're right, they are hopelessly insecure. Actually there are only two of them who do it. I know others but they don't keep sending me their propaganda e-mails and crazy conspiracy theories. Actually there are three of them, two of them are neighbors and I would like to keep on good terms with them but I'm afraid if I tell them to stop it, it will affect our relationship. Probably will. I just remember all the strum and drang I had to go through with my Mother and brother, both ditto-heads who listened to Rush Limbaugh every day, every time I visited them. Right now I'm avoided my neighbors and deleting any e-mails I see that comes through from my one super religious evangelical "friend."

Ron, I am living through much the same. It made me feel a bit better today, reading your posts. It is maddening, watching friends and relatives on facebook and elsewhere, proving their stupidity over and over. I can hardly believe it. I am always made to feel so very WRONG and GUILTY on all counts, just for being able to sort out the truth. Hugs for you.

    1. Anonymous,
Isn't frustrating to see those you otherwise respect to be so clueless and ignorant of the facts staring them right in their faces? And then they turn around and vote against their own interests.
      Thanks for your comment.

  7. A couple of nights ago, I watched PBS's American Experience "1964." From that program, I got a much better understanding of how the current Republican party started to change then with Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. They redefined conservatism -- for the worse! Though I lived through that period, I was only 21 years old, newly married and did not see what was coming. All I was seeing was LBJ's "Great Society" which has now pretty much wilted and died. The "War on Poverty" which he started then, 50 years ago, never succeeded. Now I wish we could go back to 1964 and rewrite history. Electing LBJ was a start, but it was not enough. Unfortunately, this was the time that the South abandoned the Democratic Party and went Republican. Why? It pretty much boils down to whites hating blacks -- yes, racial hatred. And they still feel that way about Obama.
